Samsung Introduces Their Flexible OLED Displays
Samsung’s flexible OLED Displays were a very interesting design that was introduced at the 2011 CES Tradeshow. A number of similar custom displays were showcased. The most impressive of all was the one encased by nothing. This screen is almost as thin as paper. You were able to bend or twist it without losing its ability to function. It was also said that because of its plastic materials, the display is unbreakable and unscratchable. Videos on the net are already displayed backing up these claims. I watched what would happen if it was beaten down by a sledgehammer and it came out without a scratch.
The flexible OLED displays are very vivid and are expected to have a more advanced battery life. This type of display could be used in cell phones. It would eliminate the problem of screen scratches and breaks. A center at Arizona State University has apparently been working with the Army to create these type of displays so that then can be rolled up or folded and put into your pocket. I have even heard talk about inserting them into newspapers.
It might not be something that will take over the display market in the near future, but it definitely has the potential. It is going to be very fascinating to see what innovators and designers are going to do with this technology.
